A couple of years ago when I was visiting a friend in San Francisco, I bought a small handheld digital voice recorder to capture some of the sounds of my trip with the intention of creating an electro-acoustic piece. Unfortunately, the microphone on the device was a little sub-par and as a result the sounds I recorded were fairly "lo-fi" as the mic was consistently being overdriven. So when I started the piece, I decided to use all the extra scratching noises and clipping clicks to my advantage and made them a part of the piece. At that point, I knew right away that the title of the piece had to come from a sign I saw while in the redwoods in Oakland, "Warning: Ticks Occur Here." All of the glitchy aspects of the sounds became the 'Ticks' so to speak. With these ideas in place, I came up with a movement plan that isolated sounds from the public transportation systems and Chinatown into separate movements, while everything else was mashed together to form the fast middle movement.
