about

For my recital, I wanted to have a piece that bridged the three main worlds of music that I have been involved in here at Western: Composition, Electro-Acoustic Music, and Guitar. Furthermore, for the Electro-Acoustic element I wanted to have live, interactive computer processing as well as set playback that I could play over or with. Because of this, this piece was very difficult to figure out how to begin. I couldn't go too far notating for the guitar, building a signal processing patch on my computer, or sculpting the electronic playback without needing to figure out how each of the other elements were working as well. Once I got going, though, this piece formed pretty quickly and naturally. A key factor in this piece is the use of microtones, specifically the quarter-tone. A quarter-tone is halfway between a half step, which is the smallest interval in a traditional, equal-tempered system. Also, listen for the actual recorded sample of the bells in Venice which were the basis for the opening overture.
