about

Eastern European-gypsy-folk-type music has long been of great interest to me. Inspired heavily by Béla Bártok and Tin Hat Trio, I decided I wanted to write a piece that landed somewhere in the middle of the modern-classical and modern-jazz approach that these musicians take to make European-folk infused music. When I found someone selling an old restored Harmonium (or Pump Organ) on craigslist, I jumped at the chance to buy it and quickly got to composing this piece. Each movement takes this gypsy-folk style and plays with the way we as listeners perceive the music. The first movement is setup as if looking at it through a microscope that has zoomed in very close. The second movement then zooms way out, only to give way to a distorted amalgamation of the first two movements in the third and final movement.
