about

This was the first piece I wrote when I started the composition program here at Western. Not only that, it was the first time I had written a piece with such strict compositional restrictions as a way to start my learning process. For this "assignment" I was only allowed to use the intervals of a Major 2nd, minor 6th, and Major 7th for each instruments' line. Also at any given time both instruments could not be playing notes that formed a Perfect 4th, and could only have two instances of a Perfect 5th, and three instances of a Tritone in the whole piece. I was also required to come up with a clear form or structure to the piece before I wrote a single note. I settled on a form where the first and second voice each start with a different character, move towards a middle 'fusing' section, and come back to the beginning section having switched character roles. This form conjured up images of colliding galaxies in my head, leading me to title the piece "Galactic Impact."
